Chocolate as an alternative to fluoride?! That’s some sweet news!

Breaking human clinical trial reveals that an extract from chocolate is actually more effective than fluoride for treating dental hypersensitivity.

Over 40 million Americans suffer from tooth pain and sensitivity caused by thinning enamel, gingivitis, or periodontal disease. A new human clinical trial conducted at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio examines the effects of a chocolate extract against fluoride-based toothpastes on tooth hypersensitivity. The clinical trial found that a naturally occurring cacao extract, Rennou™, actually works better than fluoride to restore and repair enamel and occludes dentinal tubules, ultimately eliminating dental hypersensitivity in just seven days.

"The clear star of the clinical trial was our chocolate extract Rennou™, not fluoride..."

The independent, double-blind, clinical trial of 80 patients compares the enamel strengthening potential of Theodent™ toothpaste, containing Rennou™, to fluoride-based toothpastes by examining each products’ ability to repair and re-mineralize exposed dentin, which is the leading cause of tooth hypersensitivity.

The study found that patients who brushed with cocoa-containing Theodent™ twice daily for seven days experienced “100 percent dental occlusion”, meaning the dentinal tubules of their tooth dentin were re-mineralized or repaired.

“This clinical trial illustrates the dramatic effect of Theodent after just one week. Theodent goes to work occluding dentinal tubules after the first day of use with significant benefits in just seven days,” said Theodent Chief Executive Officer Dr. Arman Sadeghpour. “The comparison to toothpastes containing fluoride - one as much as 5,000 ppm - validates what our research has shown all along: that Rennou, the active ingredient in Theodent, is more effective and safer than fluoride, which can be toxic if ingested.”

The study compares Theodent Classic toothpaste containing Rennou™, Sensodyne NuPro 5000 ppm fluoride NovaMin containing toothpaste, standard Colgate toothpaste, and a version of Theodent’s formulation with fluoride. The version of Theodent™ containing fluoride was simply for the purposes of experimentation and Theodent does not plan to release a fluoride containing toothpaste. “The clear star of the clinical trial was our chocolate extract Rennou™, not fluoride,” says Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Tetsuo Nakamoto. Theodent toothpaste with Rennou™ was compared to a 5,000 parts per million fluoride containing toothpaste, that means the competition had more than 7,100 times the amount of fluoride in their toothpaste than what’s in the drinking water and Rennou™ still had significantly better results on dental sensitivity and in a shorter period of time”

The study was performed by noted clinical researcher Dr. Bennett Amaechi, director of Cariology at the UT Health Science center in San Antonio, and funded by a research grant from Theodent.
